Advanced LA: Scene Reading Questions

To ensure everyone has access to your reading questions, you must do the following:

1. Sign into your Google Drive account and create a new document.
2. Name your document "Scene ___."  Fill in the appropriate scene number for your group.
3. Type the questions AND answers for your scene.
4. Click the blue "Share" button near the top right of the screen.
5. Where it says, "Who has access," click "Change."
6.  Then, click "Anyone with Link."
7.  Next, click the green "Save" button.
8.  Copy the provided link.
9.  Paste this link under the corresponding Edmodo post so all of your classmates can access the questions.

Enrichment Opportunity

Enrichment Opportunity – Biography Book Report       

To earn up to 10 bonus points, turn in a video of yourself taking on the role of the person you read about in your biography.

1      In the video you must:

·         Dress like the person you read about.  Use details and graphic aids from the biography to determine what the person would look like.

2        In the video, choose one or any combination of the following:

o   Act out scenes from a day in the life of the person you read about, adding commentary when necessary.

o   Give a speech from the perspective of the person you read about that reflects either what the person accomplished, what is important to the person, or what message you think the person would like to send to society based on the details you read in the biography.

o   Participate in an interview, playing the role of the person you read about and answering the questions the way you think the person would have answered based on what you read.

o   Create a mini documentary about the person that highlights the most important moments in the person’s life based on what you read in the biography.  You play the role of the person you read about.

*IMPORTANT:  If you read about a person that is notorious, or well-known for a negative reason, your options for the video are more limited, and you must discuss it with me first.

There are not length requirements, but a suggested time would be 3-5 minutes.  To turn in this enrichment project, you must put it on a disk or upload it to SchoolTube and provide me with the link.

The project is due when you return from holiday break on Wednesday, January 2^nd 2013.

I am so excited to see your videos!  Remember, I expect great things from you!

Option 1:  The setting of “Thank You, M’am” is Harlem, New York City.  Type a one page research paper explaining how and when Harlem was established as an African-American community.   Discuss the social and economic transformation of Harlem over the years.  How is the setting different today than it was in "Thank You M'am?"

Option 2:  Langston Hughes, the author of "Thank You M'am," is a significant person in history.  Type a one page research paper describing his contributions to society.  Also, describe the Harlem Renaissance and the types of art forms popular during this period.  Explain how Langston Hughes' works fit into this historical setting.

Just a reminder that all Language Arts students have a Hoot think-tac-toe project due on Monday, May 21st.  Below is a link to the assignment and rubric.

Directions for Class on May 4th 2011

1.)  Reminder:  You should be sitting at the computer that matches your seat number for class.  There is a seating chart with numbers at the front of the room if you forgot your seat number.

2).  Once you are in Microsoft Word, you need to set up the formatting for your paper using the directions below.

• Set the font to TIMES NEW ROMAN 12 pt.
• Set up double spacing for your paper.
• First, click the paragraph tab near the top, middle of the Microsoft Word Screen.

• Once you open that tab, choose double for line spacing and make sure the before and after are set to 0 pt.

• In the top, left corner, Use the following heading for your paper:  

3. Once your paper is typed, proofread it for typing errors.

4. Print one copy of your paper, and place it the area designated by Mrs. Wolf.


*If you don't finish typing, post it to Edmodo, as the final copy is due on Monday.

Remember that you should be referring to your calendar often, as we will be participating in literature circles for Hoot through the 15th of May as part of a cross-curricular thematic unit.  A link to the entire Hoot literature circle schedule, including the daily calendar, is below.  Also, there is a link below to access examples of completed role sheets.  The role sheets you complete should demonstrate a thorough understanding of the assigned text.  You can refer to the link below to see examples of role sheets for Chapters 1-3 that would receive full credit.

Congratulations Rylee!

Congratulations to Rylee K. for being chosen as a 1st place winner in the 2012 Pittsburgh Pirates Jackie Robinson Essay and Poetry Contest!  To complement a unit on poetry in Advanced Language Arts class, students wrote poems to meet the criteria for the contest.  Mrs. Wolf submitted these poems to the Pirates organization, and out of 2,700 entries, Rylee K. was chosen as the first place winner!  Check out the winning poem below!

Would you disregard the temptation, I ask,

And steer clear of the trouble?

Would you keep to yourself when your own teammates

Exclude you from the huddle?

Would you ignore the horrific taunts,

Hits, and even threats,

Enrichment Opportunity: Movie Poster

Just a reminder that if you are completing the movie poster as enrichment to complement your book project for your independent reading book, the poster is due on Monday, April 2nd 2012.

Keep in mind the following checklist  when creating your poster:

• title of movie (adapted from the book you read)
• starring actors
• background (scene or setting)                    
• release date
• rating
• catch phrase
• quotes about the movie

*The actual book project, the movie proposal adapted from the book you read, is due on Friday, March 30th.

You will be completing two tasks in class today, a vocabulary quiz and a point-of-view interactive activity in the following order:

1.  Use the link below to access your online quiz.  You have already been given your username and password.  The semicolon (;) after your username is NOT part of the username.

2. After you finish the quiz, use the following link to complete the interactive point of view activity.
First complete the TUTORIAL, then complete the PRACTICE.  As this is a feature of your online textbook, it tracks each of your progress as well as your score on the practice.  Do not skip anything, and do the practice questions until you are able to get all of the correct answers on your own.  If you don't understand why you missed a question and the explanation on the tutorial didn't clarify the answer for you, please ask me.
